Quote of the Month

July 2009

"Human language is like a cracked kettle on which we beat out tunes for bears to dance to, when all the time we are longing to move the stars to pity."
--Gustav Flaubert

How true this month's quote is! Language is so incapable of expressing our most profound thoughts, our most ecstatic emotions and our greatest insights. And yet, we can try to be at least a bit more effective by learning to speak and write more eloquently. We can increase our vocabulary so as to be able to choose just the right word to convey what we mean to others. We can learn the rules of grammar so that the structure and form of our communication can be precise and proper. We can say "drive carefully" instead of "drive careful", for example.

And the same goes for our bodies. They are the instrument with which we express life and the action of our thoughts. We will be better able to do so with an instrument that is working as it should, in top form.

So, what can we do to try to maintain this top form? We can see to it that our instrument for experiencing and expressing life is in the best condition possible. We accomplish this by getting enough exercise to ensure health. Our thoughts and mental attitudes and beliefs also effect our physical bodies. Therefore, we need to pay attention to them as well as make sure they are what we want them to be.

At St. Louis Body Mind Center we can help with this maintenance. We can remove the pain and discomfort of both rigorous exercise and a lack thereof. Bodywork can return your muscles and other soft tissues to a state of health by improving circulation and restoring homeostasis. Meditation can help relieve the stress of life's anxiety and fears by allowing you to control your mental state. And self-hypnosis can put you in charge of what goes on in your mind and what you accept as true. You can live in the world you choose. You just have to choose it.
